Strength-training dumbbells are shorter and smaller than barbells, but just like their bigger and heavier counterparts, they vary in weight that can range from 5 even up to more than 100 pounds. Dumbbell sets are usually used by weightlifting beginners or those who want to add something challenging to their ordinary workouts. These are also ideal for body building, sports training, endurance, and resistance weight training.
More than just strengthening your muscles
Dumbbells are used for toning, developing, and strengthening different muscle groups in the lower and upper areas of your body. Unlike other exercise equipment, they can be incorporated in several of your body's natural movements. Dumbbell workouts are more flexible, which means that you can target specific areas of your body that you want to tone or strengthen.
Different dumbbell sets
There are two sets of dumbbells that you can choose from: the adjustable and the fixed-weight. The adjustable set has disc plates that you can add or remove to increase or decrease the weight. The steel bar of an adjustable dumbbell is around 14 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. Adjustable disc weights are secured with clips or collars (part of the package).
Fixed-weight dumbbell sets have permanent weights attached, meaning, you cannot adjust their weight. They are either made of a hard plastic outer shell filled with concrete or with solid metal.
Buying your dumbbells
Consider the feel of the grip. If you think that they won't slip away from your grasp even if you're sweaty, then they are good. Look for sets with non-slip features. Dumbbell sets with steel bars should have crosshatch patterns on them. Fixed-weight sets should have rubber coating on the dumbbells so you can grip them properly.
